We are developing technology that converts wood chips and recycled wood into high-quality biochar and hydrogen-rich syngas Carbon and hydrogen from wood
Carbon-negative utilization of woody by-products into higher-value products Instead of heat, wood is transformed into biochar and syngas
Syngas can be used to produce, for example, biodiesel, methanol, or, most simply, methane
Xylo Gas Oy and occasionally Fiskarsin Voima Oy, now solely a hydropower company has long developed and manufactured gasification equipment Some of these devices have been operational for years and remain so
In 2019, we shifted from direct fixed-bed gasification to indirect gasification technology, combined with biochar and soon activated carbon productionThis enables the simultaneous production of highly hydrogen-rich syngas and high-quality biochar
Our equipment produces biochar and tar-free syngas from wood chips The gas contains approximately 60% hydrogen, 30% carbon monoxide, and about 5% methane and carbon dioxide, with no nitrogen The syngas can be used to produce methane or methanol but is also an excellent, easily transportable, and clean-burning fuel as is
Our goal is to commercialize our technology The company’s paperwork is in order, we have no external debt, committed team members, operational equipment, and a workshop at our disposal
In addition to our integrated biochar and gasification system, we have ready-made products, including gas flares and burner technology for syngas
We could produce more if we find additional buyers
They perform well Our flares are used in methanation P2X Harjavalta and carbon dioxide electrolysis Liquid Sun
The Runar Backstrom Foundation’s grant was a vital and welcome support for building our prototype system The grant funded materials, supplies, and salaries
Viktor Sundholm worked for us during this period
We have also initiated the patenting process for our technology Xylo Gas has an operational demonstration system in Inkoo, which we’d be delighted to showcase to the Runar Backstrom Foundation!
There is global demand for biochar and activated carbon
Finland is not yet fully aware of biochar’s potential, but this summer, we successfully sold all the biochar we had produced and stored
Next, we aim to establish a collaborative project with other stakeholders to demonstrate our technology at an end-user’s site, where all valuable outputs can be fully utilized
A great opportunity lies in using recycled wood as feedstock, producing biochar, and utilizing nitrogen-free syngas as a raw material for biomethane
Biochar and syngas from waste wood Syngas can be converted into methane via a biogas process for injection into the natural gas grid
Such collaboration is planned with Rosk’n Roll, HSY, Xylo Gas, Doranova, Gasum, Xamk University of Applied Sciences, and Aalto University We hope to secure funding for this project
It’s time to move our demonstration system from our workshop yard to real-world use!
